Harshness Problem

Recommended Posts

Well lets start off by saying me and my friend went ahead and purchased a double hose small hookah. Well the problem is no matter what we do the smoke is SO Harsh, we have tried both coal sticks and wood natural coal, also double foil, different hole patterns, loosening the vase from the stem so it can take in some air, packing the tobbaco differently, we basicly tried everything. So we got sick and tired and went for the drop and purchased a Khalil mamoon, now am I supposed to spend 100 dollars just to get a decent smoke? Im pretty sure the small hookah we have should also do something close, at least give unharsh smoke. So I noticed the whole in the hose of the khalil mamoon is double the size of the one on the small hokah, might this be a factor? I have noticed it is much harder to draw smoke from the smaller hookah due to this but can this be why? Or how about clay compared to ceramic heads, can that be a factor? All info is much appreciated. Thanks!

Harshness is normally due to too much heat. Try lessening up the amount of coals you are using or move the coals to the outside as opposed to the middle.

As far as clay and ceramic heads, I personally like the ceramic heads because they do not get so hot as well.

lol even if i use one small single coal all the way in the corner it will still be horrible.

well i had a mya qt which is pretty small...and at first with no ice it was alittle harsh...but throw some ice in that base...i would but a good about in and try and put cold water in it to...i would also but alot of small holes so you can get air into it....and about halfway through the sesh i would take the coal off for a sec have someone take a hit and get all the smoke out the base and then put the coal back on...also put the coal on the outside of the bowl and rotate it around the bowl so all the shisha gets burned evenly

Well I'll try the ice, but do you think the wider hose would make a big diff?

The wider hose will only make the draw easier. It shouldn't affect the harshness of the smoke at all. You should be able to get good smoke out of just about any half-way decent hookah.

I would say post some pics of your set up and then we could see what you're doing. If you're getting harsh smoke with a single coal, though, it could be that your hookah needs to be cleaned. How do you clean yours? Also, what brand of ma'assel are you using and what brand of coals?

Well I use the pipe brush that came with the hookah to clean it and I pour some nice hot water in the vase and let it sit for a while and dump it out, but basicly after I'm done cleaning none of the hookah smells like tobbaco. The coal Im using is natural wood charcoal, and tobbaco is Al Fakhar mint, watermelon, and double apple. They all work perfectly on the Khalil mamoon.

edit. beat me to it

Victory is mine. wink.gif

Yeah, I could see how Altoids would reduce the harshness of the smoke. Those things are crazy strong. Without seeing your setup, I can't really say what would be causing your smoke to be harsh. Is the smoke harsh right off the bat? If so, then fuck... I really have no ideas.

Have you thought about how much shisha you're packing into the bowl? Are you packing it down, and still having a "bubble" of shisha come up and touch your foil?

A wider hose will only make the draw easier, thus resulting in more air through the hookah it's self, which will make the coals 'glow' more and become even hotter yet - burning your shisha even more!

Are you using foil? Or just using a coal strait up on the shisha?

Before you start using altoids and other remedies like that I would try and re-evaluate your whole setup. You should'n't HAVE to put altoids in your base to not get harsh smoke and you shouldn't HAVE to have ice in the base. Here's a couple of things to look at

-What's your hole pattern look like?

-Are the holes that your making to big or are you poking to many holes in the foil?

-Are you "sprinkling" the shisha in the bowl and not packing it down to hard?

-Is your foil touching the shisha? You should packing you bowl just short of the rim. If your foil is touching the shisha then it gives off harsh smoke.

Really? Usually when I let the shisha touch the foil the smoke doesn't come out that great. It's never harsh beyond the point of smoking unless I'm doing something else wrong, but the smoke is never quite as smooth if I let the foil hit the tobacco.

take a picture of your setup. It sounds like the problem has to be in the bowl. 9 out of 10 times harshness comes from too much heat or another reason that causes tobacco to burn too quickly. Maybe your tobacco is packed too densely and the top burns right away. On a properly packed bowl the foil looks tight, straight and neat on top of the bowl, without tobacco poking out against it.

I'll take a pic tommorow, and ive made sure that the tobbaco doesnt touch the foil, and my foil pattern ive tried is a spiral and ive tried making one in the midle and making lines going out, with pretty small holes.

so you're getting good smoke out of the KM but bad out of the mini? could be smoke is too hot. try adding some ice to the base. without any pics, most i can say is make sure the coal is white all over before putting it on, especially with QLs

Well I'll try the ice, but right now im at skoo, good thing the forums arent blocked here. Quick question since its a double hose it doesnt have an escape valve so can that bea factor? ALSO both sides have a Check valve so that when one person is take a hit the other person doesnt need to close the tip of theirs, can any of this have anything to do with anything?
